Susimiu – From Granny Squares to Top Crochet Designers

Susimiu

Designer of the Month, PART 3
Read the story of Laura Camora, a designer, author, content creator and a crochet-lover.

Laura Camora, the creator and the face of Susimiu, is a widely recognized Spanish crochet designer, author and content creator. Her designs play with shapes and colours, turning into gorgeous clothing, accessories and decoration.

The beginning of her journey

Laura’s grandmother’s house was always filled with handmade crocheted blankets, scarves and other creations. In an interview with Javi Hook, she describes a day during her teenage years, when she noticed crocheting magazines.

“That’s where it began,” she claimed.

Learning crocheting felt tricky, but Laura kept learning new techniques each week. Through persistent practice, she fell in love with crocheting and the ability to create art with her own two hands.

In 2013, Laura created her first blog, Sweet & Knit, where she initially only published her bakings. Later, she founded her current brand, Susimiu, when her creations started to gain attention of the public.

Laura doubted about publishing her patterns. She was surprised by the positive feedback that her creations gained.

Work and creations

Susimiu has become one of the most recognised and appreciated designers in Spain. In her online store, she sells her designs, courses, and matching material packs. Her Instagram account has currently over 300K followers.

In her Spanish blog, Laura shares a free pattern every year, such as last year’s Top Galatea. You can download pattern here for free.

Susimiu has published two own books

“De La Idea Al Patrón” (From Idea to Pattern) describes the steps of the designing process, from an idea to a concrete pattern. The work contains her 6 new designs.

“Mujeres Que Inspiran. Proyectos Inolvidables De Crochet” (Women Who Inspire. Unforgettable Crochet Project) shares the stories of world-changing women, who have inspired Laura in her creations.

From granny squares to trendy designs

Soft lines, and bright patterns and colours are at the center of Sisumiu’s design. In an interview with DeEstraperlo’s blog, Laura describes that her style was shaped through experimentation. Although simple, her designs include details that provide technical challenges.

In the interview, Laura describes being surprised by the changes she has noticed in people’s attitudes: previously a “typical old-people’s hobby” has become trendy among the people of all ages.

Laura Camora’s story presents, how connecting old traditions with fresh new ideas can make handicrafts a hobby that unites people across generations.
